Virginia Tax has announced that the state will provide extensions and penalty waivers to individuals and businesses who are unable to meet their filing and payment obligations in Florida, Georgia, and Texas due to Hurricanes Harvey and Irma.
The deadline for those in Texas affected by Hurricane Harvey to file income tax returns and estimated payments has been extended to March 2, 2018. This extension applies to returns and payments with an original or extended due date between Aug. 23, 2017 and Jan. 31, 2018.
The deadline for those in Florida and Georgia affected by Hurricane Irma to file income tax returns and estimated payments has been extended to March 2, 2018. The extension applies to returns and payments with an original or extended due date between the first day of the disaster* and Jan. 31, 2018.
* Sept. 4, 2017 in Florida and Sept. 7, 2017 in Georgia
How to request a penalty waiver
If you qualify for a federal income tax extension due to Hurricanes Harvey or Irma, we will automatically waive any late filing and payment penalties as long as you file before the extended due date (March 2, 2018). You do not need to take additional action.
