SUBJECT: Lawrence C. Haake - Retirement

Lawrence C. "Pete" Haake; Jr. will retire from the department on December 31st after 33 years.

Mr. Haake, who will also celebrate his 65th birthday on his retirement date, was Director of Inheritance and Gift Tax from 1960 to 1980. He began his career in the department on January 19, 1946 as a Tax Examiner of inheritance and gift taxes.

In 1980, when the Virginia estate "pick-up" tax replaced the inheritance and gift taxes, Mr. Haake continued his service with the department as Tax Policy Coordinator for the Office of Tax Operations. In this capacity, he continued to direct the administration of State recordation, writ and probate taxes through the clerks of court.

The Governor issued to Mr. Haake a Certificate of Recognition for 38 years of outstanding service in Inheritance and Estate Tax administration with the department and for dedication to the equitable resolution of taxpayer problems consistent with the high ideals of public service.

Information concerning administration of State recordation, writ and probate taxes may now be obtained by calling (804) 257-0768.
